Rep. Pillich Introduces Bill to Implement Vets Bonus
Veterans of recent conflicts to be awarded cash bonuses

Columbus – State Rep. Connie Pillich (D-Montgomery) has introduced legislation to enable veterans of the Afghanistan, Iraq and Persian Gulf conflicts to receive a bonus from the state of Ohio. Voters statewide approved the bonus in the November 2009 election. House Bill 461 sets procedures to distribute the money.

“After the voters of Ohio showed overwhelming support of this bonus, I am pleased to be able to help the process continue,” said Rep. Pillich. “It is my belief that this is just a small token of thanks compared to the sacrifices that members of our military make for the country.  I hope that this bill will move quickly so that we can start awarding the bonuses.”

HB 461 contains the Ohio Department of Veterans Services implementation of the bonus.  The bill will appropriate $50 million in each fiscal year 2010 and 2011.  Awards and administration of the bonus program will be paid for by the sale of bonds.

Rep. Pillich had introduced the Veterans Bonus Resolution to the Ohio House in February of last year, which passed nearly unanimously.

The bill also includes some technical changes to the Ohio Revised Code regarding the Veterans Nursing Home operations, and will allow for widows and widowers of the MIA/POWs to keep their special license plates after remarrying.

The bill is currently being heard in the House Finance and Appropriations committee.

MONTGOMERY- State Representative Connie Pillich (D-Montgomery) yesterday posted an American flag at the grave of Revolutionary War hero Jacob Roosa as a part of the Patriot’s Day Celebration.  Roosa is buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Montgomery.  The Patriot’s Day Celebration was hosted by the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

“Montgomery is privileged to have these heroes buried in Hopewell Cemetery,” said Rep. Pillich.  “The Sons of the American Revolution’s program has helped spread the word about this privilege, and I am proud to recognize and honor our original veterans.”

Patriot’s Day commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first skirmishes between American Minutemen and the British Redcoats.  These first battles of the American Revolutionary War were preceded by Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride.

The City of Montgomery was founded by six veterans of the American Revolutionary War who heard the call of the West and left their homes to move to the frontier.  The Patriot’s Day Celebration was the first in the tri-state area.

Representative Pillich, an Air Force veteran, is in her first term at the state legislature. The 28th district includes Arlington Heights, Blue Ash, Evendale, Forest Park, Glendale, Lockland, Lincoln Heights, Montgomery, Reading, Sharonville, Springdale, Woodlawn, Wyoming, the northern portion of Sycamore Township, and the Pleasant Run area of Springfield Township.
