Ohio GI
Promise offers vets great hope
How can you begin to repay someone who volunteers to die for you?
We all are indebted to
the men and women who don the uniform of the American military, choosing
to live by a code of honor and fight on the front lines on the
battlefields of freedom.
As a mother, business
owner, and veteran who served in support of Operations Desert Shield and
Desert Storm, I revere the sacrifices our military members and their
families make. Thankfully, so does Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, who has
signed an executive order establishing the Ohio GI Promise.
This paves the way for
veterans from anywhere in the country to attend Ohio's public colleges
and universities and qualify for in-state tuition rates, regardless of
their state of residence. When coupled with the new federal GI Bill, our
soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines can attend college in Ohio for
free. That in-state tuition benefit even extends to their spouses and
children.

Remember veterans every day
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial
beginning of summer and the official weekend for honoring our military
veterans. We attend parades, display yellow stickers on our cars and
praise the sacrifices vets have made. They need more than that.
Cases of post traumatic stress disorder,
depression and drug and alcohol abuse are dramatically increasing in
returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan. In our community, many of our
returning veterans are members of the Army Guard and Air National Guard.
They were called up from their civilian lives to deploy to a war zone
for a year - or more. Unlike active duty personnel who come back to a
military base with all its resources, guard members are on their own.
Upon return to the states, guard unit members quickly scatter to their
various home towns without the long-term counseling and interdiction
they might need.

Close Race in the Northern Burbs
The race for state representative from Ohio's 28th District pits a
Democratic newcomer against a Republican incumbent with a record of
ethics troubles.
Pillich .... "One thing I've seen when
talking to people is that it doesn't matter if they are a Republican,
Democrat or independent," she says. "They don't want to see corruption
in government. The government is accountable to the people...."

Elections Commission Rules Against Raussen
The Ohio Elections
Commission found state Rep. Jim Raussen, a Republican from
Springdale, made a false statement by leaving 12 endorsements from his
2004 legislative race posted on his campaign web site.
In a unanimous decision last week, the commission cited the violation
but decided not to fine or issue a reprimand to Raussen, who is running
for re-election Nov. 7.
The complainant was Thomas Desando of Cincinnati.
During an earlier hearing, Raussen told the commission he had the
outdated endorsements removed from his web site shortly after he was
notified about them in August. He called it an oversight by campaign
volunteers.

Berlin Wall lent real perspective to
freedom
CONNIE PILLICH, Letter to the Editor
I was a young Air Force lieutenant when I was
stationed in West Berlin, a vibrant city 110 miles behind the Iron
Curtain and surrounded by 16 feet of concrete and barbed wire. East
German guard towers dotted the entire length of the Berlin Wall.

MODERN PROBLEMS
REQUIRE NEW WAY OF THINKING
CONNIE PILLICH | COMMUNITY PRESS GUEST
COLUMNIST
Our future must move from some disturbing trends:
over 249,000 Ohio jobs lost since 2000 -- more than half of them in
manufacturing; last in the nation in job growth and growth management,
and nearly last in new companies, small business survival, e-commerce
and gross state product.
